Dr. Herzog was Harvard Medical School’s first Endowed Professor of Psychiatry in the field of Eating Disorders. He is credited with over 290 publications and board certified in Pediatrics, General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Herzog is the Principal Investigator of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Longitudinal Study of Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa, a National Institute of Mental Health-funded naturalistic longitudinal study of 246 women with anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Dr. Herzog has a longstanding collaboration with the Neuroendocrine Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) as part of a multidisciplinary research team investigating the effects of hormone treatment on women with anorexia nervosa.

Dr. Herzog completed his child psychiatry residency at Boston City Hospital and Judge Baker Guidance Center in 1978 and his general psychiatry residency at MGH in 1980. Dr. Herzog then joined the MGH faculty and, in 1981, founded the multidisciplinary Eating Disorders Unit in the Department of Psychiatry. He served as its director for the next two decades. He also served as the Director of the Pediatric Consultation/Liaison Service in the Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at MGH for 20 years. In 1994, Dr. Herzog founded the Harvard Eating Disorders Center, which became the Harris Center at MGH; the Center was a nonprofit organization devoted to research, training, and public as well as professional education. Dr. Herzog also created the Eating Disorders Coalition for Research, Policy & Action in Washington DC and served as its president for the first five years.

Dr. Herzog has received numerous honors and awards, including the Blanche F. Ittleson Award for Research in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry from the American Psychiatric Association; the Simon Wile Leadership Award and the Eating Disorders Scientific Achievement Award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; and the Meehan/Hartley Leadership Award for Public Service and/or Advocacy presented by the Academy of Eating Disorders in recognition of his tireless efforts to champion eating disorders as a national health policy issue.
